Year 5/6

Spring Term 2026

As we begin the spring term, we look forward to a busy, creative and enjoyable few months of learning. In English, pupils will explore The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and Rumaysa: A Fairy Tale by Radiya Hafiza, experimenting with different styles of writing—from diaries and letters to adverts, character descriptions and retellings. While doing so, they will continue strengthening their spelling and grammar, especially through work on prefixes, suffixes, plurals, challenging spellings and accurate punctuation.

Throughout Maths, children will deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, while also developing their reasoning through problem solving. As the term goes on, they will explore geometry, perimeter and area, and through the Tenner project they will learn practical money skills such as budgeting, profit and loss.

In Science, pupils will investigate light and shadows, discovering how light travels and how we see. As they experiment with different materials, they will observe how shadows form and change, and how light can be reflected or absorbed. Meanwhile in Geography, they will explore the economic activity of the United Kingdom, considering the three main economic sectors, their impact on the country and the importance of sustainability. They will also learn about trade links and how natural resources are distributed across the UK.

As part of their History work, pupils will complete an independent study on the Maya civilisation, giving them a chance to consolidate their learning and present their findings confidently. In Art, children will explore identity, creating layered portraits through drawing, collage or digital tools while using their sketchbooks to experiment and reflect.

During RE, pupils will learn why certain places in the world are significant to believers. By exploring locations such as Jerusalem, the Harmandir Sahib and the River Ganges, they will consider what makes these places sacred, why people visit them and how different perspectives can affect access to them.

Finally, in Computing, pupils will develop their presentation skills using PowerPoint, continue strengthening their fluency with TT Rockstars and build on their understanding of online safety. Later in the term, they will learn to program robots, work with variables in games and use spreadsheets to handle data.

We look forward to an exciting and rewarding term and cannot wait to see the wonderful learning the children produce.
